Move sidebar to the left?

We would really like the sidebar to be on the left instead of the right. I have used a custom JavaScript module and jQuery to make it work. However, because it is happening after the page loads, the sidebar first shows up on the right for a brief moment and then you can see it moves to the left. It would be much cleaner if we could change this in the custom layout so it loads on the left to begin with.
