I was wondering if it would be possible to add custom fields that are required (or visible) only in certain types of topics. My use-case would be to enable users to specify a software version on which they are finding bugs, but I don't need them to specify a version when they are entering ideas, questions or praises.

Actually we can try to create a script for you that will check if topic type is changed and show/hide (not required) some custom field.
Please provide us forum id where you have this field, field name and types when it could be visible. We will add the code to your project and explain how it works. Then you will be able to do similar scripts yourself.
My ultimate goal would actually be to make it a required field in those topic types. The case here being to force the user to enter a software version when entering a bug.

We have exactly the same use case and would love a long-term solution to this problem. It makes no sense to require a product version for an Idea-type topic but it would be great to have it required for Bugs and Questions.
