API access to Private forum

Is it possible to use the API to access data in a Private forum? If so can you tell me what we are doing wrong.

When we attempt a command like http://userecho.com/api/forums/<id>/feedback.xml?key=<key> on a forum that is marked Private we get a blank response. However if we make the same forum Public the command returns results.
